Program Overview

Many young children spend the majority of their waking hours in child care facilities. The health impacts of environmental health exposures are especially important for this age group. For these reasons, the Western States PEHSU created a program, the Promoting Environmental Health in Early Care and Education Project. This project extends the work of Dr. Vickie Leonard RN, FNP, PhD, in greening child care environments.

This work is based on two Toolkits developed with funding from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation: Integrated Pest Management: A Toolkit for Early Care and Education, and Green Cleaning, Sanitizing, and Disinfecting: A Toolkit for Early Care and Education. The Second Edition of the Green Cleaning, Sanitizing, and Disinfecting: A Toolkit for Early Care and Education was created by the Western States Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit with funding from the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

This Toolkit discusses safer practices to protect young children and staff from infectious diseases.
Material in line with CDC guidance, overviewing safer ways to disinfect from COVID-19.
A strategy to prevent and treat pest problems with safer prevention, monitoring, and control methods.
