Stephen Petrou MD, is an attending physician on the Big Island of Hawaii where he serves as the assistant director of the emergency department at Kona Community Hospital. His passion and academic interests include clinical toxicology, drugs of abuse, and medical education. Recently appointed faculty at John A. Burns School of Medicine as assistant professor, he enjoys lecturing medical students on the introduction to toxicology. He has publications in both emergency medicine, clinical toxicology, and has presented abstracts at medical toxicology conferences.
Dr. Petrou is double board certified in Medical Toxicology and Emergency Medicine. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Western Ontario in Canada, attended medical school at St. Georges University in Grenada, and completed his emergency medicine residency at Good Samaritan Hospital in New York. His medical toxicology fellowship was completed at the University of California San Francisco where he spent two years working at San Francisco General Hospital and the attached Poison Center. His international experience brings a unique aspect to his practice.
